Malawi: Malawi and Tanzania Strengthen Economic Ties At Investment and Trade Forum

What the report says
A Malawi-Tanzania investment and trade forum has opened in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, bringing together businesses, investors and government institutions from both countries for discussions scheduled from 7 to 9 September, according to Nyasa Times as republished by AllAfrica. The event is the third such forum and is being used to identify trade and investment opportunities, strengthen business linkages and support cross-border commerce.
The forum is being organized by the Malawi Investment and Trade Centre (MITC) in partnership with Tanzania’s TanTrade. MITC said it helped arrange the participation of more than 30 Malawian small and medium enterprises, which are displaying products such as groundnuts, honey, coffee, hibiscus goods, teas, wines, jams, dairy products, cassava flour, soya products and arts and crafts.
Officials used the opening to emphasize the value of turning the two countries’ long-standing relationship into more commercial activity. Malawi’s Minister of Industrialization, Business, Trade and Tourism, Simon Itaye, pointed to the need for stronger trade, better border infrastructure and partnerships that benefit SMEs, women and young people.
Over the course of the forum, participants are expected to discuss the business environment in both countries, priority sectors, investment facilitation and ways to deepen economic cooperation. The meeting highlights broader regional efforts in East and Southern Africa to expand trade links and encourage private-sector investment.
