What the report says

The Malawi Agricultural and Industrial Investment Corporation (MAIIC) has ordered beneficiaries of the government’s Mega Farms programme who still owe loan repayments to deliver their maize to designated depots by November 22, 2026, or risk legal action. The directive was reported by Nyasa Times and distributed by AllAfrica, with MAIIC saying the recovery effort is intended to protect public funds and ensure the crop supports national food security.

According to the notice, affected farmers are expected to take maize to depots operated by the Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (ADMARC), the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) and the Agricultural Commodity Exchange for Africa (ACE). MAIIC Managing Director Taz Chaponda said borrowers should meet their obligations and warned that failure to comply could lead to debt collection measures or court proceedings. The corporation said recoverable amounts may include interest and other costs allowed under loan agreements and the law.

The action follows a High Court ruling in Malawi’s Commercial Division that removed an injunction previously obtained by some mega farmers to block MAIIC from pursuing overdue loans. In a judgment delivered in Lilongwe on August 28, 2026, Justice Trouble Kalua cleared the way for the recovery process to continue. The Mega Farms programme was created to support large-scale agricultural production through financing for farmers, and MAIIC said borrowers seeking clarification should contact the corporation directly.
