Malawi: Five Killed, 12 Injured After Speeding Lorry Ploughs Into Crowd Dancing On Road During Initiation Ceremony

What the report says
Five people were killed and 12 others injured, some seriously, after a lorry struck a group of people dancing in the road during an initiation ceremony in southern Malawi, according to Nyasa Times as carried by AllAfrica. The crash happened in the early hours of Sunday at Lundu Village on the Mangochi-Boma-Liwonde Turn-Off Road.
Police in Mangochi said the vehicle, a Toyota Dyna lorry carrying soft drinks from Liwonde to Mangochi Boma, was driven by 47-year-old Nsami Mwale. Investigators said he is alleged to have lost control while approaching the village, and the truck went into the crowd gathered on both sides of the road for the festivities.
Three of the dead were identified by police as Zainab Mmadi, 16, Pilirani Henry, 36, and Fatima Wotchi, 13. The remaining two victims had not yet been named in the report. Those killed were said to have suffered severe head injuries and were pronounced dead at Mangochi District Hospital.
Mwale was taken into police custody and is expected to face court proceedings. The report also notes that police renewed warnings for motorists to reduce speed and stay alert, especially at night and in populated areas. The case highlights broader road safety concerns in Malawi, where pedestrian activity on or near roads can increase the risk of serious crashes.
