Makerere allows final-year students to sit supplementary exams in September

Makerere University has approved an exceptional round of supplementary examinations for eligible final-year students, according to Nile Post. The exams are scheduled for September 7–11, 2026, and are intended to help affected students clear outstanding academic requirements in time for the university’s 77th Graduation Ceremony, planned for January 2027.

The university said the arrangement is temporary and will operate while its proposed Supplementary Examinations Policy is still being reviewed. Nile Post reported that the decision followed a resolution at the University Council’s 171st meeting, which directed the University Senate to develop a formal policy to support timely completion of studies by students whose progress has been delayed.

Eligibility is limited to final-year students who have failed no more than two course units and whose marks fall within set ranges. For undergraduates, the reported range is 30% to 49%; for postgraduates, it is 40% to 59%. The university also said marking will take place soon after the exams so that successful candidates can be considered for graduation.

Makerere’s Students’ Guild welcomed the move and advised affected students to contact their college principals, deans or heads of department for guidance. In general, the decision matters because it gives finalists a chance to finish without waiting for a later graduation cycle, while also reflecting the university’s broader effort to streamline academic progression.
