Cyclingnews reported that Jonas Vingegaard had successful surgery in Denmark on Tuesday after fracturing his collarbone in a crash that forced him out of the Tour de France. The Visma-Lease a Bike leader fell with 21km left on stage 15 while his team was helping chase a breakaway. According to the report, Victor Campenaerts had been guiding the squad through road furniture, and Vingegaard, a few riders behind, appeared to lose traction and strike the kerb before leaving the race by ambulance.

Visma sports director Marc Reef told Danish broadcaster TV 2 that the operation had gone well and described it as not among the most complex procedures. Cyclingnews said the team has not yet settled Vingegaard’s remaining season plans, with discussions expected after the Tour. The report noted outside speculation that he could recover in time to consider the Road World Championships in Canada in late September, but Reef indicated both a return this year and no further racing were possible.

The abrupt loss was a major blow because Vingegaard had been second overall. Cyclingnews, citing Belgian and Danish media, reported that he visited teammates at their hotel before the rest day, shared burgers and fries with them, and urged them not to dwell on the crash. Campenaerts said Vingegaard specifically told him not to blame himself and encouraged the team to make the most of the remaining race.

With Vingegaard gone, Visma-Lease a Bike is shifting from a general classification focus toward stage opportunities. Matteo Jorgenson said there had been no clear backup plan, while Sepp Kuss and Campenaerts indicated the team would regroup and attack in the final stages.
