What the report says

Lwengo District leaders have urged Uganda’s central government to raise funding for local governments, arguing that current allocations are too low to address gaps in education, healthcare and road infrastructure. The appeal was made by District Council Speaker Kanyesigye Madox during the district’s budget conference for the 2027/2028 financial year at the District Council Hall, according to Nile Post.

Kanyesigye said the district needs more resources to improve schools, health facilities and roads, and noted that the current allocation of about Shs1 billion is also stretched by staff salaries. He said a larger budget would help leaders respond more effectively to residents’ needs and improve access to basic public services.

The report also says district councillors, led by Hamza Ssempijja, welcomed the proposed 2027/2028 budget and said it offered hope for tackling some of the district’s challenges. Separately, Bukoto West MP Muhammad Muyanja Sentayi called on residents to avoid activities such as bush burning and wetland encroachment, linking environmental damage to heavier impacts from recent rains.

Muyanja said he had written to the ministry responsible for disaster management to seek assistance for households affected by the rains in Lwengo. He also encouraged tree planting as a longer-term way to protect the environment and reduce vulnerability to extreme weather.
