Luweero targets 100km of roads for rehabilitation

Luweero District has begun rehabilitation work on the Wobulenzi–Sekamuli road, the first project in a broader plan to improve about 100 kilometres of roads during the 2026/27 financial year, according to Nile Post. The district says the effort is meant to strengthen transport links, ease movement within the area and support access to markets, especially for farmers.

The article says Luweero has received Shs250 million from the government’s annual Shs1 billion road maintenance fund for districts. District Chairperson Erasto Kibirango said the current quarter will cover three roads, including Naluvule–Kikooza and Sekamuli–Luwuube, while the wider programme aims to reach several routes across the district. The Wobulenzi–Sekamuli stretch is 12 kilometres long and is expected to cost Shs96 million.

District engineer Robert Kalenzi said the road will be graded and damaged sections repaired to improve transport and help residents move produce without delays. Residents quoted in the report said poor road conditions have made travel harder, particularly in the rainy season, and have increased transport costs for people moving goods and passengers.

Local leaders welcomed the programme but urged close monitoring to ensure the funds are used properly and the works meet required standards. In general, road maintenance is often a key issue for rural districts because it affects trade, access to services and the movement of agricultural produce.
