Luweero Muslim Council Elects New Chairman After Impeachment

What the report says

Nile Post reported that the Luweero Muslim District Council has chosen Hajji Muhammad Matovu as its new district chairman after the impeachment of former chairman Ali Ndawula. According to the report, Ndawula was removed over alleged misconduct and alleged misrepresentation of the district. Matovu was endorsed unanimously at a district council meeting on Tuesday and sworn in immediately afterward.

The report says Matovu promised to cooperate with other district leaders, support unity among Muslims, and emphasize transparency and accountability under the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council constitution. At the same meeting, the council approved a Shs264 million budget for the 2026/2027 financial year, intended to support district operations and development activities. District Treasurer Gadafi Abdu Bachou urged leaders to improve resource mobilisation so the planned programmes can be carried out.

Land matters were also raised during the meeting. Luweero District Kadhi Sheikh Hajji Mulindwa Ramadhan Swaib Nsanja expressed concern about alleged encroachment and unlawful sale of Muslim land, including Nalweweta, described in the report as a UMSC property reportedly occupied by members of the Kibuli faction. He alleged that about 7.5 acres had been sold under the claim of processing land titles, and called for Muslim properties in the district to be registered and titled to help protect them.

Nile Post also reported that the council approved sectoral committees to monitor programme implementation and strengthen accountability. Members were told that renovation of the Luweero Muslim District Headquarters Mosque and construction of a Shs150 million ablution facility are ongoing, with the project said to have reached the roofing stage.
