Lugave clan wins Luganda language competition in UK and Ireland

The Lugave clan has won a Luganda reading competition organised for Baganda living in the United Kingdom and Ireland, according to Nile Post. The event was held on Zoom and drew more than 100 participants, with the aim of encouraging the use of Luganda and supporting cultural preservation among the diaspora.

The final round featured four clans: Olulyo Olulangira, Eŋŋonge, Ffumbe and Olugave, with Olugave emerging as the overall winner. Buganda’s representative in the UK and Ireland, Ssaalongo Geoffrey Kibuuka, chaired the competition and thanked the clans that fielded contestants. He also urged Kabaka’s subjects abroad to join weekly Luganda lessons to strengthen their language skills.

The Second Deputy Katikkiro of Buganda, Robert Waggwa Nsibirwa, attended virtually and praised Baganda in the UK for maintaining links to Buganda despite living far from home. He described the competition as evidence of growing commitment to cultural identity and said such initiatives help people remain connected to their language and heritage.

Nile Post reported that the initiative is part of wider efforts by Baganda communities abroad to preserve Luganda, Buganda’s culture and identity for current and future generations. Nsibirwa also encouraged organisers to consider opening future editions to participants from other countries, which he said could broaden the competition’s reach.
