What the report says

ScienceAlert reported on a new study in npj Aging linking lower sugar exposure in the earliest stage of life with reduced risks of several brain-related conditions decades later. The study examined UK Biobank data from 60,394 people born from 1951 to 1956, using Britain’s postwar sugar rationing as a natural comparison point. Sugar rationing ended in September 1953, after which average adult intake and children’s candy consumption rose sharply.

Researchers compared people whose first 1,000 days — from pregnancy through about age 2 — overlapped with rationing against those born after restrictions ended. ScienceAlert reported that the rationing-exposed group had a 27% lower risk of dementia from any cause, a 46% lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease, an 11% lower risk of depression and a 20% lower risk of anxiety. No similar pattern was seen for Parkinson’s disease. The associations were strongest when lower sugar exposure continued after birth, rather than occurring only in the womb.

The article said MRI data from a subset of participants also showed modest brain differences: those exposed to rationing after birth had brains that appeared about 0.39 years younger on average, along with larger volumes in areas including the hippocampus and thalamus. Senior author Bing Zhang of Guangzhou Medical University told ScienceAlert the findings may reflect metabolic programming during a sensitive period of brain development, though the study did not directly test mechanisms such as insulin resistance or inflammation.

The findings do not prove that early sugar reduction prevents dementia or mental health conditions. ScienceAlert noted limits including the non-randomized design, broader postwar changes, lack of individual sugar-consumption data, a predominantly White and healthier volunteer sample, and relatively few dementia cases during follow-up.
