What the report says

Liverpool have been drawn away to Tottenham in the third round of the EFL Cup, according to BBC Sport Football. The draw also set Manchester United against Brighton and holders Manchester City at home to Norwich, while Fleetwood, the only fourth-tier team remaining, will host Sheffield United.

The round marks the entry of the nine Premier League clubs involved in European competition: Arsenal, Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Brighton, Crystal Palace, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Sunderland. BBC Sport noted that the matches are scheduled across the weeks beginning 7 and 14 September to avoid clashes with the opening stages of the Champions League and Europa League.

Elsewhere in the draw, Sunderland will face Hull, Ipswich have been paired with Arsenal and Coventry will meet Aston Villa. Bournemouth drew Lincoln, Everton were matched with Wolves, and Leyton Orient will play Bradford. West Ham will face either Fulham or AFC Wimbledon once the final places are decided.

The remaining second-round ties will determine the last two entrants: Chelsea host Luton and Fulham play AFC Wimbledon. If Chelsea advance, Leeds could face them in the next round. The Carabao Cup draw helps set the route to the later stages of the competition and gives lower-league clubs a chance to meet top-flight opposition.
