CBS News reported that the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy opened Monday in Plymouth Superior Court, with opening statements followed by testimony from her former husband, Patrick Clancy. Lindsay Clancy, 35, has pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of the couple’s children — Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months — who were found dead at the family’s home in Duxbury, Massachusetts, on Jan. 24, 2023.

According to CBS, prosecutors contend Clancy planned the killings. Her defense has acknowledged that she killed the children but argues she was overmedicated while being treated for mental health problems and was experiencing severe postpartum psychosis. Clancy, who was paralyzed after attempting suicide that night, appeared in court in a wheelchair.

Patrick Clancy was the first witness and was still testifying when Judge William Sullivan ended court for the day around 3 p.m. CBS reported that he described Lindsay Clancy’s mental health struggles in the weeks before the deaths, including suicidal thoughts, treatment at Massachusetts General Hospital, a day program in Providence, and McLean Hospital. He also testified that her mood appeared to improve during family outings shortly before Jan. 24 and said she seemed to be having one of her better days when the children were killed.

The trial is expected to last six to eight weeks, and CBS reported that the potential witness list includes nearly 200 names. Testimony will not be held Tuesday for an unrelated reason and is scheduled to resume Wednesday with Patrick Clancy still on the stand.
