What the report says

NBC10 Boston reported that Lindsay Clancy’s murder trial opened Monday in Massachusetts with jury opening statements and testimony from the first witness, her ex-husband Patrick Clancy. Clancy, a Duxbury mother and former labor and delivery nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital, is accused of killing her three children at the family home in 2023. The case is expected to run for several weeks.

According to NBC10 Boston, prosecutors told jurors that Clancy strangled Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, on Jan. 24, 2023, after sending Patrick Clancy out to run errands. The outlet reported that authorities say she then went out a second-story window and was left paralyzed from the waist down. Prosecutors argued in opening statements that the killings were planned and that Clancy is criminally responsible.

Defense attorney Kevin Reddington presented a different account, arguing that Clancy was experiencing postpartum psychosis at the time. NBC10 Boston described the condition as a rare mental illness associated with factors that can follow childbirth, including stress, sleep loss and hormonal changes. The defense position makes Clancy’s mental state central to the trial.

Patrick Clancy took the stand after openings and, according to NBC10 Boston, gave emotional testimony about the children while also describing Lindsay Clancy’s mental health issues in the period before their deaths. The proceedings mark the start of a closely watched trial involving questions of criminal responsibility, mental illness and the deaths of three young children.
