Live updates: Firefighters struggle to control wildfires threatening Bordeaux as hotter weather looms - CNN
What the report says
CNN reported that wildfires across France and Spain have displaced more than 300,000 people, with emergency crews racing to contain major blazes before hotter weather returns this week. In southwestern France, firefighters are working around communities near Bordeaux, while in Spain crews are trying to prevent renewed flare-ups in the Madrid region and keep separate fires west of the capital from joining.
According to CNN, France has carried out what it described as its largest peacetime evacuation since World War II as fires burn in the Gironde region. Many evacuees are sheltering in Bordeaux, though the city’s mayor said the municipality itself was not directly threatened. Nearby communities have been cleared, and CNN reported severe damage in Le Porge, a commune west of Bordeaux with about 3,500 residents.
In Spain, the Interior Ministry said more than 100,000 people have been evacuated nationwide, including nearly 30,000 in the Community of Madrid, CNN reported. At least one death has been reported in Spain’s fires. CNN described Navas del Rey, a town of about 3,400 people, as deserted after evacuation orders, with access blocked by Guardia Civil and Civil Protection personnel. Greek authorities, cited by Reuters in CNN’s live report, said two Greek firefighting aircraft were deployed to Spain through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.
The fires are unfolding amid a broader European heat and drought emergency. CNN linked the intensity of the season to climate change, noting that heat waves have dried out landscapes and increased fire risk. The outlet also reported a separate rescue in Italy’s Apulia region, where the Coast Guard said more than 400 tourists and swimmers were evacuated by sea from a fire near Peschici.
