Lira RCC Egole Intensifies Anti-Graft War, Recovers Extorted Funds from Elderly Restocking Beneficiary

Dokolo Post reports that Lira City Resident City Commissioner Lawrence Emmy Egole has recovered Shs500,000 allegedly taken from an elderly beneficiary of the government’s Restocking Programme. The beneficiary, identified as Akullu Sijaria of Blue Corner North in Lira City West Division, had received Shs5 million through the Office of the Prime Minister-backed programme before the money was reportedly deducted.

According to the report, the funds were recovered from Adupa Denis, a Parish Development Committee member in Blue Corner Ward. Dokolo Post says investigations by the RCC’s office found that Adupa acknowledged receiving the Shs500,000 and claimed he acted on instructions from an LCII chairperson identified as Mr. Bongomin. The refund was reportedly made at the RCC’s office in the presence of local officials, including the LCI chairperson, Town Agent Alum Teddy, Egole, and members of his team.

Egole warned local leaders, civil servants and Parish Development Committee members against exploiting people enrolled in government programmes, saying those found extorting beneficiaries could face legal action. The report also says his office recovered Shs7 million allegedly mismanaged by the Blue Corner Parish Development Model SACCO, though it gives limited detail on the circumstances of that separate recovery.

The case matters because programmes such as restocking and the Parish Development Model are intended to support household livelihoods, particularly among vulnerable residents. Dokolo Post reports that some community members welcomed the recoveries as a step toward improving confidence in public programmes and strengthening accountability in Lira City.
