What the report says

Lira Regional Referral Hospital (LRRH) has widened the range of internationally accredited tests available at its satellite laboratory from 14 to 51, according to Dokolo Post. The hospital said the change follows South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) approval for 37 additional tests after a reassessment held on October 6 and 7, 2026.

At a meeting of the Hospital Parliament on Wednesday, October 14, Senior Executive Consultant Dr. Andrew Odur said the expansion reflects confidence in the lab’s ability to meet international quality standards. He said the larger scope should strengthen LRRH as a diagnostic center, improve patient care, and reduce the need for Ugandans to seek specialized testing outside the country.

The newly covered tests include urinalysis chemistry, tuberculosis urine LAM testing, blood sugar, kidney and liver markers, and several blood count measures. SANAS delegation head Nontando Glacia Moeketsi said the process met ISO 15189:2022 requirements, citing the lab’s technology, trained staff and quality management systems. She said the accreditation helps confirm the reliability of results within the approved scope.

Satellite Laboratory Manager Benard Ongora said the hospital will focus on maintaining accuracy, timely turnaround and staff capacity. The report also noted that Dr. Odur linked the development to Uganda’s broader preparedness for major international events, including the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, though that was presented as his view rather than an official national announcement.
