Lira City Headteachers Urge Parents to Supervise Learners During Holiday

Headteachers at several schools in Lira City have called on parents to closely supervise learners during the three-week second-term holiday, according to Dokolo Post. In comments made during a media visit to selected schools on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, they urged families to encourage revision, limit phone and other gadget use, and teach children road safety as the term winds down.

At City Parents School, headteacher Okello Amos said the break should be used productively and asked parents to help learners keep studying. He also advised schools to avoid barring pupils from examinations because of unpaid fees, saying parents should instead be given time to settle balances. The school reported 76 candidates for its City Mock examinations and said it ended the term with 1,146 primary learners and 455 nursery learners.

At Light Vocational Secondary School, headteacher Ayo Eric Jasper said mock exams were underway for candidates and internal exams for other classes. He appealed for safer holiday supervision, scholastic materials and payment of outstanding fees before the next term. He said the school had registered 378 candidates for the 2026 national examinations. He also pointed to the school farm in Bala, which supports food production and learner meals.

Lira Secondary School headteacher Ocoo Isaac likewise urged parents to stay in contact with schools and to monitor children closely during the holiday, warning that weak supervision can expose teenagers to risks such as teenage pregnancy. The Ministry of Education and Sports calendar cited in the report says schools are due to close for the second-term holiday on August 21, 2026, and reopen for third term on September 14, 2026.
