Lille considering legal action after Santos injury

What the report says
French club Lille are considering legal action after defender Tiago Santos suffered a serious knee injury in Saturday’s Ligue 1 win over Le Havre, according to BBC Sport. Lille described the challenge on the 24-year-old as uncontrolled and dangerous, saying it came from behind and should have been punished with a red card.
Santos was carried off on a stretcher after the tackle by Le Havre midfielder Amir Richardson and has been diagnosed with an anterior cruciate ligament rupture and a meniscal tear in his right knee. Lille said he is expected to miss several months. The club has asked the French Football Federation and the Professional Football League to review the incident, including the decisions made by the refereeing team and the video assistant referee.
Le Havre said Richardson and the club support Santos in his recovery, but defended the match officials’ handling of the incident. The club also questioned Lille’s push for retrospective punishment, saying that would fall outside current regulations. BBC Sport said it has contacted the league for comment.
The case comes as Lille sit second in Ligue 1 and prepare to face Arsenal in the Champions League on Tuesday. More broadly, the dispute highlights ongoing concerns in football about player safety, disciplinary thresholds and how VAR is used to review serious challenges.
