Liberia: Spoiled Rice Triggers Health Concerns in Ganta

Concerns about food safety surfaced in Ganta, Nimba County, after workers discovered what appeared to be spoiled parboiled rice while unloading a commercial shipment at the Jungle Water Distribution Store on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2026, according to the Liberian Observer via AllAfrica. The rice was said to be part of a trailer load sent from Monrovia and made up of multiple 25-kilogram bags.

Witnesses described some bags as showing dark staining and signs of deterioration, while the product reportedly carried an expiration date in December 2029. That has led to questions about whether the problem was linked to storage or transportation rather than shelf life. The article said the total amount of rice affected had not been confirmed at the time of publication.

A conductor on the trailer said the shipment was loaded in Monrovia at the H&H warehouse and that the damaged condition was not noticed before departure. He suggested, without confirming it, that leakage at the warehouse may have contributed. Workers reportedly separated the bags that appeared usable from those considered unfit, and the damaged rice was said to be returned to the supplier.

The report also said no Commerce inspector was immediately present during unloading, prompting renewed concern about inspection practices for food entering local markets. Later local reports indicated Nimba County Commerce authorities took possession of the affected rice for further review. If confirmed, that step could help determine the cause, origin and regulatory status of the shipment.
