Liberia: Liberty Party Is 'No Helping Force,' Dillon Says As 2029 Comes Into View

What the report says
Sen. Abraham Darius Dillon used a Liberty Party gathering in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, to signal that the party does not want to remain a junior partner in Liberian politics ahead of the 2029 elections. Speaking at the groundbreaking for the party’s planned permanent headquarters on Saturday, he said Liberty Party aims to secure its own place in national decision-making and should not be viewed as a mere support base for other groups.
According to The Liberian Investigator, Dillon did not say whether Liberty Party would run its own presidential candidate, stay aligned with President Joseph Boakai’s Unity Party, or enter a new coalition. He stressed party rebuilding, urging members to pay dues, stay united, and strengthen the institution rather than focus too early on the next election. His remarks come against the backdrop of past cooperation between Liberty Party leaders and Boakai’s 2023 campaign, which helped bring him to power.
The report adds that those alliances also caused internal rifts inside Liberty Party, including expulsions in 2023 after some officials backed the Unity Party ticket. Dillon’s comments may renew interest in the future role of Liberty Party leader Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence and whether the party will again join a broader opposition or contest on its own. Deputy House Speaker Thomas P. Fallah also spoke at the event, praising the party’s effort to build a permanent home.
