What the report says

Liberia has warned that reduced U.S. engagement and funding are putting added pressure on the United Nations and other multilateral bodies, according to a submission reported by The New Dawn and distributed by AllAfrica. The statement, dated October 6, 2026, was issued in Washington, D.C., and said the United States has traditionally been the UN’s largest financial backer. It argued that cuts and withheld funding under President Donald Trump’s administration are contributing to wider strain across the international system.

The Liberian submission said the result could be a more resource-limited UN at a time when peacebuilding, conflict prevention and development efforts need stronger support. It also raised concerns about the broader impact on African diplomacy and regional cooperation, including relations between the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Alliance of Sahel States, or AES, which includes Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger.

Liberia said the ECOWAS-AES file should be watched closely to see whether current diplomatic efforts can lead to more structured dialogue. It also pointed to a review of the UN Office for West Africa and the Sahel, citing issues such as preventive diplomacy, terrorism, democratic transitions and climate-related security risks. More broadly, the submission linked political cooperation with economic integration, calling for deeper intra-African trade and fewer barriers to commerce. In context, the remarks reflect wider African concerns about the effects of shifting U.S. assistance and funding priorities on multilateral and regional institutions.
