What the report says

Liberia has received its first group of 20 people transferred from the United States, according to The New Dawn, marking the start of a broader arrangement between Monrovia and Washington. The arrivals were reported on August 20, 2026, at Roberts International Airport in Monrovia. The deal is expected to allow Liberia to accept up to 1,200 third-country nationals from the U.S. over the course of a year.

The Liberian government said the arrangement stems from diplomatic notes exchanged with the United States in September 2025. Information Minister Jerolinmek M. Piah said those expected to be transferred include people from African and Western Hemisphere countries who have been medically cleared for travel. He added that some may later apply for asylum in Liberia.

Officials emphasized that the transferred individuals are not being brought to Liberia for prosecution and will not be treated as criminals under Liberian law. The government also said people transferred under the arrangement may seek asylum, while those who choose to leave Liberia can do so through the relevant procedures. The U.S. government is expected to facilitate the transfers and provide support. The first arrival signals that additional groups may follow as the arrangement is put into effect.
