Liberia: Liberia Begins Countdown to UN Security Council Presidency

What the report says
Liberia has begun a formal countdown to its first-ever rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council, with the government launching a “Road to the United Nations Security Council Presidency” program in Monrovia. According to the Liberian Observer report carried by AllAfrica, the initiative was introduced on October 26 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during United Nations Day commemorations, ahead of Liberia’s scheduled Council presidency in December 2026.
Foreign Affairs Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti said the moment reflects decades of diplomatic work, national recovery and engagement with the international system. She framed Liberia’s return to a leadership role at the UN as part of a longer national history, and highlighted the country’s past conflict, later peacebuilding, and the lifting of remaining UN sanctions in 2016 as part of that journey. President Joseph Nyuma Boakai also attended the launch and said Liberia would approach the role with humility and a commitment to cooperation on global challenges.
Liberia was elected in June 2025 as a non-permanent Security Council member for the 2026-2027 term, receiving 181 votes in the UN General Assembly. The presidency will give the country a month to steer Council work and spotlight issues it says matter to developing states, including peacebuilding, climate change, migration, inequality and emerging technologies. The report says the government plans a series of public and diplomatic events before December, including a briefing, a proposed war memorial unveiling and the launch of a feminist foreign policy.
The article also notes that the anniversary of the UN’s founding and Liberia’s postwar experience are being used to connect the country’s domestic peace process with its international role.
