Liberia: Ganta Court Orders Release of Ex-Mayor Amos Suah

What the report says
The Ganta Magisterial Court in Nimba County, Liberia, has ordered the immediate release of former Ganta City Mayor Amos N. G. Suah, ending a detention that followed a contempt-of-court sentence issued only days earlier. According to reporting from the Liberian Observer carried by AllAfrica, the release order was signed by Stipendiary Magistrate Cllr. Sam Nya Harris and directed prison authorities at Sanniquellie Central Prison to free Suah at once.
Suah had been sentenced on September 29 to 30 days in prison and fined US$100 after the court found him in contempt over radio remarks about a disputed property case in Ganta. The court said his comments, made after an eviction and demolition tied to the land dispute, were demeaning to the judiciary and could encourage public resistance to its ruling. His case drew significant attention in Nimba County, where supporters argued that jailing him raised free-speech concerns, while the court maintained it was enforcing respect for judicial authority.
The contempt case grew out of a longer property dispute involving about 1.5 lots of land in Ganta. Court records cited in the report say the land belongs to the Musa Turay Intestate Estate and that prior orders covered eviction of occupants from the site. Suah, who was then mayor, had been involved in earlier proceedings concerning the property and later challenged the court’s actions on radio, prompting the contempt finding. The release leaves unresolved the broader land dispute, which has become a local flashpoint involving the court, city officials and residents.
