Former Liberian House Speaker Dr. Bohfal Chambers has criticized the country’s proposed Fiscal Year 2026 national budget, which exceeds US$1 billion, calling it difficult to reconcile with everyday conditions in Liberia. According to the Liberian Observer report distributed by AllAfrica, he raised the issue during a radio discussion with residents of Pleebo, Maryland County, on Voice of Hope Radio 103.3 FM, while speaking by phone from Monrovia.

Chambers argued that the budget’s size matters less than whether public money produces visible improvements in roads, electricity, healthcare, jobs and wider economic opportunity. He said the government should place greater emphasis on implementation, transparency and accountability, rather than celebrating a large headline figure. His comments reflect a broader concern in Liberia, where infrastructure gaps and limited public services remain major political and economic issues.

He also urged President Joseph Nyuma Boakai to govern for all Liberians, not only supporters of the ruling Unity Party, and to ensure that citizens receive equal access to public services and development opportunities. In addition, Chambers questioned the handling of the government’s newly acquired road equipment, often referred to as “yellow machines,” saying the Ministry of Public Works should have a central role in overseeing such assets. His remarks highlight continuing debate over how Liberia manages state resources and delivers development.
