Liberia: Boakai to Dedicate Gbarnga-Salayea Highway

AllAfrica, carrying a Liberian Observer report by David A. Yates, said President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. is expected to dedicate the completed 81-kilometer Gbarnga-Salayea Road Corridor on July 28, 2026. The ceremony is scheduled for the Bong-Lofa County Border Rest Station near the bridge and will include senior Liberian officials and representatives of international development partners.

According to the report, the event will also launch work on two additional road schemes in Lofa County: the 50-kilometer Salayea-Konia Road and the 6-kilometer Zorzor-Yeala Road. The government says these projects form part of the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development, which places infrastructure at the center of economic growth and national connectivity.

The Ministry of Finance and Development Planning said Liberia mobilized US$72.8 million from the OPEC Fund for International Development, the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa and the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development for the next 56 kilometers of upgrades. The Saudi Fund for Development has also committed financing for the remaining 64-kilometer Konia-Voinjama Road, while construction on the newly approved road works is expected during the coming dry season.

Officials cited by the Liberian Observer said the corridor is intended to reduce transport costs, improve access to services, support farmers and traders, and strengthen links with neighboring Guinea. The report also said related development financing includes US$49.6 million for the Botota-Gbarnga-Zorzor power transmission project and a US$700,000 BADEA grant to improve the Salayea Clinic and Konia Health Center.
