Learning from Arteta and inspiring youngsters - Wilshere on management

What the report says
Luton Town manager Jack Wilshere has reflected on his first senior managerial role and the lessons he says he carried from his playing days and coaching work at Arsenal. In a BBC Sport Football interview, the 34-year-old spoke at Kenilworth Road about returning to the club where he began as a child, and about how his move into coaching followed an early retirement caused by injury.
Wilshere said his time working around Mikel Arteta at Arsenal helped shape his understanding of management, especially around planning sessions, explaining ideas clearly and learning how to coach rather than only perform as a player. He also said he values having seen young Arsenal players progress through the academy, including names he worked with such as Myles Lewis-Skelly, Ethan Nwaneri and Max Dowman. BBC Sport reported that Wilshere won two FA Cups with Arsenal and represented England at the World Cup and European Championship.
At Luton, Wilshere has already overseen silverware, with the club winning the EFL Trophy at Wembley in April. He said he is grateful for the chance to begin his coaching career early and stressed the importance of high standards, accountability and clear communication with players. He also said his own mistakes as a player give him perspective when guiding youngsters.
The interview aired as part of BBC One’s Football Interview programme during the Premier League season. It highlights Wilshere’s transition from former Arsenal and England midfielder to manager of a club aiming to push forward in League One.
