Leading oncologist reveals 6 habits that could promote longevity and reduce your risk of chronic illness - Fox News

What the report says
Fox News reported that Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, an oncologist and University of Pennsylvania bioethicist, is promoting a simplified approach to healthy aging built around six lifestyle habits. The article draws on Emanuel’s book, “Eat Your Ice Cream: Six Simple Rules for a Long and Healthy Life,” and his recent appearance on the ZOE Science & Nutrition podcast, where he argued that people do not need to make wellness an all-consuming pursuit to improve their odds of living longer and reducing chronic disease risk.
Emanuel’s first rule, framed in the book as “Don’t be a schmuck,” refers to avoiding clearly high-risk behaviors. Fox News said he cited smoking, vaping and dangerous activities such as BASE jumping or climbing Mount Everest as examples. His other recommendations include maintaining social ties, keeping the mind engaged through learning or hobbies, limiting sugary and highly processed foods without rigid self-denial, exercising moderately and getting adequate sleep.
A major theme of the report is Emanuel’s view that social connection is central to health. Fox News said he described loneliness and isolation as significant mortality risks and compared their health impact to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. He also criticized what he called the “wellness industrial complex,” saying wellness should support a meaningful life rather than become an obsession.
Asked what someone should try first if they were not following the rules, Emanuel recommended hosting dinner parties. As summarized by Fox News, he said cooking, conversation, social contact and a walk afterward can combine several healthy behaviors in one routine.
