What the report says

KAMPALA — Ugandan lawyer Asuman Matovu has urged authorities to protect the independence of lawyers and journalists, saying both professions should be able to carry out their duties without undue interference. In comments reported by Nile Post, he warned that limiting legal defence work or media access in sensitive cases could weaken access to justice and the public’s right to information.

Matovu’s remarks came as debate continues over the withdrawal of lawyers from the defence of Dr Kizza Besigye and Hajji Obeid Lutale, and over attempts to curb coverage of politically sensitive court proceedings. He argued that lawyers should not be discouraged from taking on controversial matters based on the profile of the accused, and said it is the courts, not counsel, that must decide guilt or innocence after hearing evidence.

He also referred to constitutional protections for legal representation, saying an accused person should be free to choose counsel. Beyond the courtroom, Matovu defended journalists’ role in reporting on justice issues, saying the media remains an important source of public information and should not be the first target when complaints about coverage arise.

Matovu called for dialogue between government and professional bodies, saying concerns affecting law, journalism and medicine should be handled through consultation rather than restrictions. His comments reflect broader tensions around high-profile criminal cases in Uganda and the balance between regulation, professional ethics and public scrutiny.
