MLB Trade Rumors reports that the Philadelphia Phillies’ monthlong search for rotation help remains unresolved as the August 3 trade deadline approaches. The need emerged after rookie right-hander Andrew Painter was optioned to Triple-A on June 17 following a difficult first 65 major league innings. Philadelphia has since explored the market for a steadier fifth starter, but the broader starting-pitching trade market has been slow to develop.

The Phillies tried Alan Rangel in that role over the past month, including outings after an opener and three starts, but he allowed 13 runs in 20 1/3 innings and the club lost all five games. Rangel was optioned back to Triple-A on Monday, leaving Philadelphia with another short-term vacancy. With Cristopher Sánchez, Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola and Jesús Luzardo lined up around a Thursday off day, the team still needs either a bullpen game or another starter for Saturday against the Yankees.

Anthony Franco notes that Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia reported the Phillies were actively looking for a fifth starter, while Matt Gelb of The Athletic reported the front office has also considered a more ambitious addition: a playoff-caliber starter. Such a move would likely cost more in prospects or salary and would have to be weighed against other needs, including right field and the bullpen.

The issue matters because Philadelphia is in a tight National League Wild Card race and has struggled badly in games started by Painter or Rangel. A higher-end starter could also protect the club if one of Sánchez, Wheeler or Luzardo is unavailable in October, while potentially reducing reliance on Nola, whose ERA is near 6.00 and whose home run rate has worsened.
