Lango Schools Prove North Can Compete Nationally as Truth P/S Heads to East Africa Championship

Two schools from Lira City have drawn attention after strong performances at a national debate championship in Wakiso, challenging the view that schools in Northern Uganda are behind the rest of the country. According to Dokolo Post, Truth Nursery and Primary School in Ngetta and Amuca Primary School were the only schools from Lango to take part in the competition at Green Top Primary School from September 3 to 5.

Truth Nursery and Primary School emerged as the national debate champion after defeating Uganda Martyrs Primary School of Mbarara in the final. The school also placed second in both public speaking and poetry. Amuca Primary School reached the semi-finals in debating. School leaders said the results showed that with proper support and opportunities, pupils from Lango can compete strongly at national level.

The victory means Truth Nursery and Primary School will represent Uganda at the East African Afro-Junior Debate Championship in Tanzania in December. The headteacher said the school intentionally sent a team of eight learners, including debaters, poets and public speakers, to compete across different categories. The pupils involved said debating helps build confidence and communication skills.

The report also notes that the school had qualified through the Lango Regional Debate Championship, where Amuca Primary School finished as runner-up. In a broader sense, the result highlights the growing visibility of schools from northern Uganda in academic and co-curricular contests.
