Lango Leaders Petition Government Over Health, Education and Power Gaps

Nile Post reported that leaders from Uganda’s Lango sub-region have appealed to Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja to push government action on gaps in health care, education, electricity and infrastructure. The issues were raised during thanksgiving prayers in Erute South County, Lira District, for State Minister for Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees Sam Engola, following his appointment to Cabinet.

According to the report, Lira District Woman MP Linda Agnes Auma said parts of Erute South still do not have a government health centre despite a policy expectation that each sub-county should have one. She said residents had made land available for both a health facility and a government secondary school, and also asked that electricity be extended to communities close to Lira City that remain outside grid coverage.

Leaders also raised concerns about Akii-Bua Stadium, now being built in Lira City, and its expected role in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. Ajuri County MP Fred Ebil Jalemeso said local support for the project was tied to expectations that the stadium would host tournament matches, not only training activities. He also pointed to delays in road upgrades serving the stadium. Oyam South MP Patrick Ogwang Obura asked for more funding for livestock restocking programmes.

Nabbanja, who said she attended on behalf of President Yoweri Museveni, pledged to follow up on the concerns, including roads, drought, livestock restocking, Lira Airfield expansion and AFCON preparations. Nile Post also reported that she said government had cancelled a parish facility construction contract over implementation irregularities after Shs1 billion had been paid, recovered the money, and was seeking approval for the UPDF Engineering Brigade to take on the works.
