Al Jazeera, carrying an Associated Press report, said McLaren’s Lando Norris won the Formula One Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday at the Hungaroring near Budapest, ending an eight-month gap since his previous full Grand Prix victory. The defending world champion started from pole position and took his first race win of the 2026 season, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen finishing second and Mercedes teenager Kimi Antonelli third.

The report said Norris lost the lead early after running wide at Turn 2, allowing McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri to move ahead. The race then swung back in Norris’s favour after Piastri was held up by a collision involving Carlos Sainz Jr., enabling Norris to emerge from the pit sequence in front. Piastri later retired because of a gearbox failure, clearing the way for Verstappen to inherit second place.

Antonelli’s podium finish helped him extend his championship lead, according to the report. His title rivals had difficult afternoons: Lewis Hamilton finished fifth after receiving a penalty for speeding in the pit lane, while George Russell came seventh following a troubled start that nearly stalled his car.

The result is significant for Norris and McLaren because it ends a winless run in standard Grands Prix dating back to Sao Paulo in November, although he had won a sprint race in Miami in May. Hungary was the final race before Formula One’s mid-season break, with the Dutch Grand Prix listed as the next round on August 23.
