Lampard 'somewhere in the middle' of Mourinho and Ancelotti

Coventry City manager Frank Lampard says the coaching styles of Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti have shaped his own approach, describing himself as sitting between Mourinho’s intense, demanding manner and Ancelotti’s calmer, more trusting style. In an interview for BBC’s Football Interview series, Lampard said he has taken different lessons from both managers, whom he played under at Chelsea.

BBC Sport reported that Lampard, now eight years into his managerial career, believes experience has taught him to judge players as people as well as performers. He said younger coaches can be too quick to react to mistakes or lateness, while a more balanced approach is sometimes needed. At other times, he added, firmer management is still required when standards slip on the pitch.

The interview also followed Coventry’s return to the Premier League after a 25-year absence, with Lampard saying promotion last season ranks among the biggest achievements of his career. He led Coventry to the Championship title after taking charge in November 2024, and the club opened the new campaign with a 3-0 defeat by Arsenal. Coventry are due to play their first home match against Hull City on Saturday.

Lampard said the focus this season is on bravery and adaptation, acknowledging that the Premier League will demand a different approach, especially defensively. He added that while staying up would be a success, he does not want his squad to be overwhelmed by outside expectations.
