Kyiv warns Iran against escalation after Ukraine’s Caspian Sea attack

Al Jazeera, citing its staff and Reuters, reported that Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha spoke by phone with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi after Tehran condemned a Ukrainian drone strike on an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea. Sybiha said on X on Tuesday that he urged Iran not to take escalatory action and again called on Tehran to stop backing Russia’s war against Ukraine.

The exchange followed Iranian statements that a Ukrainian attack on an Iranian commercial ship had killed one sailor and wounded another. Araghchi said, according to Iranian media cited in the report, that Sybiha told him the strike was accidental and that Ukraine did not want tensions with Iran to rise. Araghchi also wrote that Iran was not seeking escalation, while saying attacks on Iranian citizens or interests were unacceptable and that losses should be compensated.

Kyiv said the Caspian Sea operation was directed at Russian warships and vessels it described as carrying Iranian-linked military cargo, not at civilians. Sybiha said Ukraine’s actions were intended to defend against Russian aggression and were not meant to hit civilian ships or people. Iran has warned that the incident cannot pass without a response, with a senior Iranian lawmaker calling the attack a miscalculation.

The dispute matters because it links the Russia-Ukraine war to wider Middle East tensions. Ukraine has long accused Russia of using Iranian-designed drones in attacks, while Iran rejects or disputes aspects of Western and Ukrainian claims about its role. Al Jazeera also noted that Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said he discussed Iran-related security challenges with Sybiha, as Ukraine and Israel both navigate conflicts involving Tehran or its partners.
