Kwania Hits 90% Road Works Target as Residents Hail Improved Transport

Dokolo Post reports that residents in Akali and Inomo sub-counties in Kwania District, Uganda, have praised improvements to local transport after the district completed most of its planned road construction and maintenance programme for the 2025/2026 financial year. The publisher says district officials reported that 161.3 kilometres of roads have been rehabilitated or maintained out of a target of 169.3 kilometres, or about 90% of the planned works.

The works were carried out by the Kwania District Engineering Department under the annual road maintenance programme. According to the report, the focus has been on access roads that had long been difficult to use, with the aim of improving movement of residents, farm produce and public services, especially before the rainy season.

During a monitoring visit on Tuesday, District LC5 Chairperson George Kakoma Akacha said he personally checks road projects to confirm progress and the use of public resources. He cited limited government-provided machinery as a major constraint, but said the district intends to acquire its own equipment. Dokolo Post also reported that more than 10 roads were opened in the fourth quarter, and that several routes have been lined up for opening in the first quarter of the 2026/2027 financial year.

District Engineer Edward Odongo Eyak said Kwania receives about Shs1 billion annually from the central government, but only Shs250 million goes to road maintenance. He identified fuel costs and insufficient equipment as key implementation challenges. Further works are planned on the Akot–Oder–Abwong Primary School–Akali Road and the Amach Border–Agwa–Abongomola Road, which officials expect to complete in the next quarter.
