What the report says

Police in Kole District, Uganda, rescued a teacher from an angry mob after he was accused of trying to defile a 14-year-old pupil, in an incident that escalated into violence and left one person dead. According to Dokolo Post, the confrontation happened late on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at Lwala Trading Centre in Ayer Sub-county.

The suspect was identified as Okello Otim Samuel, a teacher at Abilonino Demonstration Primary School. Police said the allegation involved a pupil from the same school, Akullu Miriam, 14. Officers from Abilonino Police Post initially responded after two men reported the matter, but they were reportedly overwhelmed by the crowd and later called for backup from Kole Central Police Station.

Dokolo Post reported that reinforcements were also met with hostility, and stones were thrown at officers. During the disorder, a police officer sustained serious injuries, while police said shots were fired, resulting in the death of a 28-year-old resident of Lwala Trading Centre, Aluri Morris. Two civilians, including a 15-year-old pupil and a 23-year-old man, were also injured. The injured were taken to health facilities for treatment.

Police said the teacher was eventually arrested and is being held on allegations including aggravated defilement and aggravated trafficking in children, while separate inquiries are looking into the fatal shooting and damage to a police vehicle. Authorities urged the public to avoid mob justice and to report suspects to police instead. More generally, the case highlights ongoing concerns about child protection, violence during arrests, and the risks faced by officers responding to community confrontations.
