Kisoro Vets Urge Farmers to Vaccinate Livestock Against FMD

Veterinary officers in Kisoro District are urging livestock farmers to vaccinate their animals against foot-and-mouth disease as authorities step up containment measures. According to Nile Post, farmers have been told that animals without the required vaccination tags and certificates could be impounded during inspections. The warning comes amid the first phase of a national vaccination campaign by Uganda’s Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, which is running in July and August after a recent outbreak in the Ankole region.

The report says the campaign covers cattle, sheep, goats and pigs, all of which are vulnerable to the disease. Sipiriyano Munyansanga, the veterinary officer for Muramba Sub-county in Bufumbira South, told farmers that cattle owners are required to pay Shs8,000 per animal for vaccination, while sheep and goat owners must pay Shs4,000 per animal. He also warned that those who do not comply could face arrest.

Munyansanga said livestock found without vaccination tags during inspections would be impounded and taken to the Ankole region for further action under government directives. He encouraged farmers to take part in the drive, saying vaccination is the best protection against losses linked to foot-and-mouth disease. The advisory highlights the broader public-health and economic risk posed by the disease, which can disrupt animal production and affect rural livelihoods if not controlled.
