King Oyo’s body leaves the US for Uganda

The remains of Tooro Kingdom’s late King, Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, have started their journey from the United States back to Uganda, according to Sqoop Uganda. The publisher reported that the body is expected to arrive on Friday, September 4, 2026, and that footage shared online showed mourners gathering at a cargo facility in the US before the coffin was flown home.

Sqoop Uganda said President Yoweri Museveni is expected to receive the remains at Entebbe International Airport at about 10 a.m. before the procession continues to Kyegegwa and then by road to Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal City. The article linked the planned route to Tooro royal custom, which requires a deceased king’s body to be kept at the official palace during the mourning period.

Once the remains reach Karuziika Palace, the kingdom is expected to begin a nine-day mourning period, with the king lying in state as final burial preparations continue. After that, the body is scheduled to be taken to the Karambi Royal Tombs, the traditional burial site for Tooro monarchs. The return is likely to draw royal family members, cultural leaders, government officials and other mourners as the kingdom prepares for the funeral rites.
