King emerges from the Tardis as Commonwealth Games begin

BBC News reported that the 2026 Commonwealth Games opened in Glasgow with a ceremony at the Hydro Arena featuring King Charles III, Queen Camilla, the Loch Ness Monster and more than 3,000 athletes and Para-athletes. The King and Queen arrived in a Doctor Who-style Tardis, a nod to Glasgow’s blue police boxes, and were met by Olympic cycling champion Sir Chris Hoy before taking seats near Prime Minister Andy Burnham.

Teams from 74 nations and territories paraded into the indoor venue, with Botswana entering first and Scotland receiving the loudest welcome as the host team arrived last in white shirts and kilts. The ceremony blended Scottish and Commonwealth themes, including bagpipes, drummers, a large Loch Ness Monster figure, and performances by artists including Nathan Evans, Callum Beattie, Nina Nesbitt and KT Tunstall. BBC said the show was billed as a tribute to Glasgow and the Commonwealth.

The Games are notable because Glasgow stepped in after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew as host in 2023, leaving the event’s future uncertain. BBC reported that this edition is smaller than Glasgow’s 2014 Games, with eight fewer sports and reused venues because of the shorter preparation period. Commonwealth Sport president Donald Rukare credited the city’s 2014 legacy, while Glasgow 2026 chair George Black praised local communities, businesses, artists, schools and volunteers for helping deliver the event.

In his opening remarks, King Charles thanked Glasgow and highlighted the need to tackle plastic pollution in oceans and waterways. Competition is scheduled to run for 10 days, with the closing ceremony set for Sunday, 2 August, and the first medals due in Para-powerlifting on Friday evening.
