King David crash exposes years of failure to enforce school trip safety rules

Ministers and officials from Education, ICT and Works reportedly met at the Media Centre to agree on the government position after the accident.

The report says the crash has renewed scrutiny of whether Uganda’s existing rules for educational tours are being enforced. Ministry guidelines already require schools to seek approval for trips, provide itineraries with routes and stopovers, use mechanically sound vehicles, finish journeys before 6 p.m., and avoid long-distance trips for nursery and lower primary learners. Parents quoted by the outlet called for mandatory clearance by education authorities and traffic police, including checks on vehicle roadworthiness, driver qualifications, passenger numbers and routes.
