Kikuube Village Health Teams Get Bicycles to Improve Nutrition Screening

Kikuube District in western Uganda has handed over 74 bicycles to Village Health Teams (VHTs) to improve nutrition screening and referral services for children and pregnant women. According to Nile Post, the bikes were obtained with support from the Government of Uganda and UNICEF and are meant to help health workers move more easily within hard-to-reach communities.

District health officials said the goal is to shift nutrition screening closer to villages so malnutrition can be identified earlier and referred promptly to health centres or hospitals. Kikuube District Health Officer Dr Andrew Mugisha said the bicycles should help VHTs reach more households and improve the district’s ability to detect and manage cases sooner. The district leadership also linked the effort to broader community health access.

District Chairperson Paddy Kisembo praised VHTs for their volunteer work and urged them to use the bicycles responsibly for health-related duties. He noted that the bikes are intended to support outreach and, where needed, transport of patients, not other domestic uses. The district secretary for social services, Lydia Kabahemba, said the measure should reduce delays in identifying malnutrition and improve outcomes for mothers and children.

More broadly, the handover reflects a common public-health approach in rural areas: providing basic transport to frontline community workers so they can reach families that are otherwise difficult to access. In this case, the district said the focus is on strengthening local nutrition services at household level.
