Kikuube RDC Shuts Bars Operating Before 3pm, Arrests Two

What the report says
Kikuube district authorities have begun enforcing a government directive that bars should not open before 3pm, with an operation in Buhimba Town Council leading to the closure of several bars and the arrest of two people. According to Nile Post, the enforcement was led on Tuesday morning by Kikuube Resident Commissioner Godwin Angalia Kasigwa, working with police and local officials.
The operation targeted establishments found operating earlier than allowed, including one identified as JJ Bar. Several bar workers were taken to Buhimba Police Station for questioning, while the affected premises were ordered shut until the permitted time. The district said the move is meant to align local businesses with a national directive issued by the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Health.
Angalia said the restriction is intended to discourage drinking during working hours and support productivity, while police said they will help ensure the order is implemented across the district. He warned that enforcement would continue until all bars comply.
The story reflects a wider government effort in Uganda to regulate alcohol access during the day. In general, such directives are often justified by authorities as part of broader campaigns on discipline, work ethic and reducing alcohol-related harm, though Nile Post’s report focused on the local enforcement action in Kikuube.
