Kiboga prison warder Anguyo sentenced to death for killing four

The High Court in Kiboga has sentenced Prison Warder Moses Anguyo to death after he admitted killing four people in a shooting at Kiboga Government Prison in February. According to Nile Post, the ruling followed guilty pleas to four murder counts, along with convictions for two aggravated robbery charges and threatening violence. The court also ordered compensation for stolen clothing taken during his escape from the prison compound.

The case involved a February 23, 2026 incident at the prison where prosecutors said Anguyo, while on duty, became violent during a routine inspection after being found using a mobile phone. The public article says he allegedly pointed his AK-47 at the prison officer in charge, opened fire, and then shot several people inside the facility. Those killed included two public servants and a one-and-a-half-year-old child, and the court said six children were left orphaned.

Nile Post reported that Justice Jane Okuo Kajuga weighed both aggravating and mitigating factors before imposing sentence. The court considered the use of a service weapon, the loss of life, and claims of targeting based on tribal identity as aggravating factors, while taking account of Anguyo’s guilty plea, remorse, youth, apology and willingness to compensate robbery victims. The ODPP said there was no evidence of premeditation.

The report adds that Anguyo fled Uganda after the shooting, was later arrested in Aru in the Democratic Republic of Congo on March 27, 2026, and returned to face trial. The sentence is still subject to appeal under Uganda’s legal process.
