Kenya: Wetangula - Sifuna Too Green for Presidency

What the report says
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has again questioned Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s suitability for the presidency, saying Kenya needs a leader with deeper political experience. According to Capital FM’s report carried by AllAfrica, Wetangula made the remarks during a women’s empowerment event in Hamisi Constituency, Vihiga County, on 23 October 2026.
Wetangula argued that presidential hopefuls should first learn from Kenya’s political history before seeking the country’s top office. He pointed to former presidents Jomo Kenyatta, Daniel arap Moi, Mwai Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta, as well as President William Ruto, as examples of politicians who built long careers before reaching State House. He said voters were not ready to elect a president without adequate experience.
The Speaker also used the gathering to back Ruto’s bid for a second term. He listed development projects he said were planned for the area, including road upgrades, a possible extension of the Standard Gauge Railway toward Busia through Vihiga, a stadium project in Kidundu, and improvements to roads and markets.
The remarks come as Sifuna has become a visible opposition figure and his future in national politics draws attention amid wider opposition divisions. The exchange highlights how early campaign positioning and debates over experience are already shaping Kenya’s political conversation ahead of the next presidential race.
