Kenya: Wanyama Urges LSK to Pair Court Boycott With Crackdown On Rogue Lawyers

According to the report, the LSK has called for a one-day national court boycott and an open-ended targeted boycott of judicial officers who have secured court orders blocking the Judicial Service Commission and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission from pursuing complaints against them. The Judiciary and the Kenya Magistrates and Judges Association have opposed the move, arguing that dialogue would be preferable and warning that litigants may bear the immediate cost of delayed hearings.

He questioned whether the LSK should also identify advocates who allegedly bribe judicial officers, represent judges seeking to halt disciplinary processes, or mishandle client funds. He pointed to pending matters before the Advocates Disciplinary Tribunal and cited an older compensation case involving families of prison warders as examples of concerns about rogue practitioners.

The dispute matters because it places Kenya’s legal profession at the center of a wider debate over how to restore confidence in courts while protecting access to justice. Capital FM reported that the LSK has defended the boycott as a push for institutional reform, faster justice and stronger accountability.
