Kenya: US Delegation Backs Fight Against Period Poverty in Kenyan Schools

A delegation of US-based leaders and humanitarian advocates is in Kenya for a week-long outreach campaign focused on period poverty in schools, according to Capital FM via AllAfrica. The group is visiting schools across the country to distribute sanitary products, provide menstrual hygiene education, and offer counselling and mental health support to schoolgirls.

The effort was highlighted in Kisii, where delegation members said the aim is to reduce missed class time and help girls stay in school with greater confidence and dignity. Dr Leslie Latimore-Lorfils, a leadership strategist and former senior military officer, said the issue affects more than access to pads and also touches on self-esteem and education. Other participants, including Shandra Johnson, Craig Bruce, and Dominic Obadiah of Civility Voice Diplomat, said the programme is intended to support girls facing stigma, shame, and practical barriers linked to menstruation.

The delegation donated sanitary pads and menstrual cups to hundreds of girls, presenting the cups as a reusable option alongside disposable products. The outreach is also addressing menstrual myths and stigma, and it is expected to continue in additional schools this week under Civility Voice Diplomat’s coordination.

The report reflects a broader public health and education concern in many parts of the region: when girls lack menstrual supplies or support, attendance and learning can suffer.
