What the report says

A fuel tanker exploded shortly after midnight at Sachangwan on the Salgaa-Nakuru section of Kenya’s Nakuru-Eldoret highway, according to Capital FM as republished by AllAfrica. The blast triggered an emergency response, and part of the highway was temporarily closed while responders worked at the scene.

The Kenya Red Cross said its team treated two casualties and that a multi-agency operation helped contain the fire. The highway was closed at Kibunja and the Soilo interchange so emergency crews could operate safely, and motorists were advised to use alternate routes until the area was cleared.

The incident happened near the General Service Unit camp at Sachangwan. Officials said the cause of the explosion had not yet been established, and Rift Valley Regional Police Commander Samuel Ndanyi said investigations were under way. Emergency teams were also checking whether more people were hurt.

The crash has again drawn attention to the Salgaa-Sachangwan corridor, which has long been viewed as a dangerous stretch of road. Kenyan government reporting cited by Capital FM has previously listed nearby locations as accident hotspots and mentioned planned safety measures in the area. The latest fire also follows another tanker disaster on a different highway in Kenya less than three weeks earlier, underscoring continuing concerns about tanker safety and public exposure at accident scenes.
