What the report says

Kenya’s Salaries and Remuneration Commission has revised the pay terms for chairpersons and members of state corporation boards, increasing the monthly honorarium for chairpersons to Sh130,000 from Sh80,000. The update also sets a Sh30,000 sitting allowance per meeting and was reported by Capital FM and distributed by AllAfrica on October 14, 2026.

According to the source material, the new package followed a request from the State Corporations Advisory Committee and a SRC review carried out on October 6, with the commission’s letter dated October 13. Ordinary board members will not receive a monthly honorarium, but they will be eligible for the sitting allowance and other approved benefits.

The revised terms also include annual medical cover of up to Sh3 million for inpatient care and Sh200,000 for outpatient treatment. Additional allowances cover telephone costs, lunch where meals are not provided, and transport reimbursement at Automobile Association rates when official vehicles are unavailable.

SRC has instructed state corporations that pay above the approved ceilings to align with the new rates. However, current board members will keep their existing pay under personal-to-holder terms for the duration of their contracts. The changes are significant because they set the compensation framework for public-sector boards and may affect how state corporations budget for governance costs.
