Kenya: SGR Services At Risk As Rail Workers Threaten Industrial Action

AllAfrica, carrying a Capital FM report from Nairobi dated 27 July 2026, reported that the Railway Allied Workers Union has warned of possible industrial action that could disrupt rail services across Kenya, including the Standard Gauge Railway. The union says Kenya Railways has not resolved long-running grievances over pay, working conditions and employee welfare, raising concern about effects on both passenger and freight operations.

According to the report, RAWU Secretary General Erick Tirop accused Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Mainga of focusing on infrastructure projects while neglecting the staff who operate the network. Tirop said wages have not kept pace with living costs and that employees remain under an outdated pay structure. He also alleged repeated violations of workers’ rights and claimed Mainga’s term had expired in January, calling for new leadership at the state corporation.

RAWU Deputy Secretary General Judith Nafula said rail workers maintain round-the-clock operations and should be compensated in line with their responsibilities. National Chairman Emmanuel Otieno said the union could pursue legal action or a nationwide strike if management does not respond to its demands. The report did not include a response from Kenya Railways or Mainga.

The dispute matters because the SGR is a key part of Kenya’s transport system, moving passengers and cargo between major economic points. Capital FM also noted the standoff comes as the government increases enforcement of the newly gazetted minimum wage, with Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua warning employers of inspections and possible penalties for non-compliance.
